MRF Aims for First Phase 1 Clinical Trial in 2014

November 10, 2009 – Saratoga, CA– The Myelin Repair Foundation today released its first five-year report that includes a new set of ambitious goals for the second 5 years of its myelin repair research program.

The Promises Made, Promises Kept report summarizes the MRF’s scientific achievements as well as its advances in demonstrating that its Accelerated Research Collaboration™ model has effectively accelerated the rate of target discovery.

“We know two things today that we did not know five years ago,” says MRF Founder and President Scott Johnson. “First, we know that myelin can be repaired in animal models of MS. And second, we know that our ARC model has accelerated the pace of basic scientific discovery. There could be no better news for MS patients and others who have so generously supported our work for the past five years. Having said that,” continued Johnson, “our work will not be done until we can bring a myelin repair treatment to market.”

Among the goals for the MRF’s second 5 years are:

  • Identifying additional novel myelin repair targets;
  • Validating targets to industry standards;
  • Building industry partnerships that will lead to the first myelin repair Phase I clinical trial; and
  • Continuing to identify biomarkers, imaging tools and other techniques for effectively measuring clinical outcomes.

These are lofty, yet important goals for our organization to achieve in the next 5 years. Every dollar that you give will get us closer to achieving these goals. Donate now.

  2. This is exciting news. What exactly will be tested in this clinical trial? Is it true that the trial will occur in 2014?

  3. Joan,
    As always, the Myelin Repair Foundation sets a high bar of achievement. Back in 2004, when most experts in medical research (such as Dr. McFarland from the NIH) were doubtful that we could successfully finding one drug target using our collaborative approach, we set a goal of finding one within 5 years. We found 19 potential drug targets.

    In moving our drug targets through the process of validation, drug discovery and clinical trial phases, we will be facing new challenges in learning, understanding and managing the processes. We may find that there are variables that slow/speed our progress that we cannot control.

    We are aiming to build industry partnerships that will lead to the first myelin repair Phase I clinical trial by 2014. But it’s too early to say what treatment will be tested in the Phase 1 clinical trial but we will keep you informed in our progress.

  4. Just received my fantastic T-Shirt prize in the mail. Thank you! I am not easily impressed by tees (and I have MANY) but this one ROCKS! I will wear it proudly and hope to inform many about the MR Project. I am posting about it tomorrow, as I read the material you sent and was quite impressed. Your model for gathering data and producing a product that actually helps is simple, but rarely implemented; thereby making it complex in its simplicity. FYI My blog is A Stellarlife and my name has a J in it: Diane J Standiford—-important since we shall become allies! :)
